Meet our Team
Athene Irving
Athene grew up in Cape Town and qualified from the University of Stellenbosch in 1999 with a BSc in Physiotherapy. Then followed a move to the UK where she was able to pursue her passion for travelling and gain experience working in the acute and sub-acute hospital setting. This is where she realised her interest in the nervous system and the incredible ability of this system for recovery and repair.
On return to Cape Town, Athene joined the therapy team at the Western Cape Rehabilitation Centre. Here, she enhanced her assessment, treatment, and management skills in the rehabilitation of clients with physical disabilities including Spinal Cord Injury, Stroke and other neurological conditions, before moving into private practice. Athene is committed to life-long learning and the development of skills and knowledge. She continues to attend courses, conferences and workshops in the field of neuro-rehabilitation, Vestibular and balance rehabilitation and specialised seating. She is a trainer for the Professional Wheelchair Service Delivery Training Courses (Basic & Intermediate). Athene has been involved in research into Falls Intervention and Prevention programmes, and obtained her Masters in Physiotherapy from the University of Cape Town in 2020. Athene presented at, and was course co-convenor of the 4th Vestibular Assessment and Rehabilitation Therapy course (UCT) in 2023.
Candice Murray
Candice graduated from UCT with a BSc in Physiotherapy (Hons) in 2016. Thereafter, she completed her community service in East London, at Frere Tertiary Hospital. Here, she gained experience in a variety of fields of physiotherapy, and discovered that her passions lay in the field of rehabilitation, specifically, Neurological, Orthopaedic and Sports physiotherapy.
Following her community service Candice stayed on at Frere, before returning to Cape Town in 2019. Candice has enjoyed doing the Neuro-developmental Therapy course and other “neuro” courses. completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Neuro-musculoskeletal physiotherapy (WITS) in 2022, to enhance her diagnostic skills and treatment of soft tissue injuries.
More recently, Candice attended the 4th Vestibular Assessment and Rehabilitation Therapy course (UCT). Candice is a sporty person herself. Having represented South Africa, she understands the importance of the small things that work together to create the big things. Whether it’s regaining independence following a stroke or excelling on the sports field, she would love to help you achieve these goals.
Marian Wills
Marian graduated with a BSc in Physiotherapy from Pretoria University in 1989 and thereafter gained invaluable hospital experience in Johannesburg and the United Kingdom. She persued her studies further at UCT, gaining a BSc Hons in Exercise Science and thereafter opened her own Physiotherapy practice in Cape Town (Bergvliet).
In 2014, Marian completed an intensive clinical Masters degree at Stellenbosch University in Orthopaedic and Manipulative Physiotherapy. Additionally, in 2016 she did her Yoga teacher training (200hr) in Nepal and more recently a Pilates teacher training in London.
Marian’s special interests are combining traditional physiotherapy tools with movement, for rehabilitation of pain and musculoskeletal dysfunction. She enjoys being outdoors and participates in a wide range of exercise including running, swimming, hiking, Pilates and Yoga. Marian was a competitive swimmer at school and also at masters swimming level
Marian has assisted with lecturing and providing Clinical Supervision to both undergraduate and postgraduate Physiotherapy students.
Katie Pretorius
Katie graduated from the University of Cape Town (UCT) with a Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy with Honours in 2017. Subsequently, she completed a year of community service at Tshwane Rehabilitation Hospital in Pretoria. During this period, her passion for neurological and orthopaedic rehabilitation grew. After completing her community service, Katie embarked on a fulfilling 3-year journey at Vincent Pallotti Rehabilitation Centre. Her time at this esteemed institution allowed her to gain a wealth of practical knowledge in the specific fields of neurological and orthopaedic rehabilitation. Her dedication to the well-being and recovery of her patients is unwavering. Katie’s genuine passion lies in working closely with individuals, guiding them on a path toward realising their full potential.
Nicky Talbot
Nicky graduated with a BSc in Physiotherapy (Hons) from WITS in 2005. After completing her community service at Ngwelezane Hospital in Empangeni, KZN, she worked in the neurological wards at Edenvale General Hospital and Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Gauteng.
Nicky then joined the RehabMatters team at McCulloch Harrison and Partners, pursuing her passion for helping people with neurological and vestibular disorders. She has completed both Basic and Advanced Bobath courses, attended a Vestibular Rehabilitation course at the University of Pittsburgh, USA, and participated in the Second Vestibular Assessment and Rehabilitation Therapy at UCT in 2012.
Nicky is dedicated to her patients, accompanying them on their journey to recovery. She enjoys the outdoors, adventuring, exploring, and spending time with her family.
Essie Jansen van Vuuren – Accounts
Essie is our accounts manager. She joined the team in 2014 and has many years of experience supporting the smooth operation of our practice.
She and her team (Glisco Medical Billing) work behind the scenes, expertly managing our billing, account and medical aid queries.
Essie lives with her husband, her three boys and their dog.
Hayley Christie –
Reception
Hayley assists with reception, office management and admin. You may meet her at the practice or chat with her on the telephone.
Hayley has diverse work experience, all relating to client service. She has many things to be grateful for, and enjoys spending time with family, nature, yoga and energy healing.
